Holger Koch Pinot Noir * 2017 [2 Bottles max per customer]Regular price $42.00 Save $-42.00
From Holger's best parcels at higher elevation with higher volcanic content in the soil. After drinking this Pinot Noir it's likely to ruin you for Burgundy and Oregon for at least a few weeks. Savory and smooth, it has a a chewy structure and tangy bite to lift up the plush fruit. Bing cherry, dried cranberry, and subtle notes of fresh coffee, it has a long, savory finish. A really enchanting balancing act between the depth of the ripe fruit and the refreshing finesse, to me this indicates a few things, but knowing when to exactly when pick these grapes is a big factor. The rest is the artist's touch Holger has in the cellar. This is aged for 15 months in 300L Stockinger barrels. Ready to drink now, it will also age nicely for a decade.

Brianne first made wine in 2015 to provide restaurants with a by-the-glass priced Pinot Noir. This concept has since morphed into an enchanting blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Gris, fermented with about 50% whole clusters in order to make a high-toned, vibrant, lighter-bodied red that’s great with a chill. Lots of tart cherry and wild strawberry fruit, framing the volcanic tones and racy acidity, making it almost too easy to drink.

This wine spent 6 whole years developing in the winery before it was ever released for consumption. 21 days of maceration before 2 years in large oak barrels before another 4 years in bottle. The maturation is present on the palate in the wine’s more developed fruit flavors. The taste is not of fresh cherries, but cherries stewed and simmered with anise and sage. There’s a scent of freshly laid asphalt, and flavors of autumn leaves, smoke, and something akin to blood sausage. As the wine develops in the glass, baker’s chocolate and rounder tones emerge. The finish is long, and it lingers.

Chateau Moulin "Cuvee Piverts" Fronsac 2014Regular price $32.00 Save $-32.00
Notes from the importer:
This cuvée isn’t what comes to mind when most people think of Bordeaux. Stuffy men in suits, haute cuisine, tannic reds requiring sickly new oak treatment or absurd bottle age to be approachable . . . forget all that. Bénédicte and Grégoire Hubau of Château Moulin are part of a new school of winemaking in the Bordelais, emphasizing sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention in the cellar. In this sense, the cuvée Piverts represents their most revolutionary bottling: made without added sulfur, it is a transparent reflection of Merlot grown in the limestone and clay of Fronsac, in the heart of Bordeaux’s right bank. We suggest decanting this youthful “natural wine” to best appreciate its purity of fruit and the honest expression of terroir it provides. Fun, gulpability, deliciousness—no, these are not words typically associated with Bordeaux. –Anthony Lynch

La Vecchia Posta "Teraforta" Dolcetto Colli Tortonesi 2019Regular price $21.00 Save $-21.00
La Vecchia Posta is a small—just 3-hectare-large—farm tucked into the Tortonesi Hills in the Piedmontese province of Alessandria. A family-run operation, they have been working organically for the past 27 years, as well as hand-harvesting and, more recently, vinifying without sulfites. The Teraforta vineyard is located 400 meters above sea level, with dense, clay-rich soils that are particularly well-suited to Dolcetto. With just 6 days of skin maceration, and 6 months of aging in stainless steel prior to bottling, this is a decidedly young and fresh wine—meant for immediate consumption and enjoyment.
A bright and candied cherry flavor greets the nose upon pouring a glass. On the palate, however, that fruit is tightly reigned in by the wine’s tannin and a bolt of acidity. Spiced notes of mace and cinnamon mingle amongst a tart, cranberry-like fruit. A remarkably refreshing expression of Dolcetto, there is a thirst-quenching character here that one might not expect.
Brea Cabernet Sauvignon Massa Vineyard 2018Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00
A lot of "new wave" Cali producers who I normally like have fallen short for me when it comes to Cabernet. It seems like they are trying too hard to pick early and make a tasteful, restrained wine when I want a little hedonism. The Brea, made by Chris Brockway of Broc Cellars, delivers where others have failed. It has the structure and grip of Bordeaux, which i love. It is restrained enough, with no new oak, but it's also not afraid to be California Cabernet. Blackberry, English Breakfast tea, iron, and thyme notes gave it a leaner, earthier feel but it has the weight and juicy ripeness to balance the more mineral, herbaceous elements. From a dry-farmed, organic vineyard near Carmel.

Bottum Up Rouge is Grenache and Mourvedre with a very short carbonic maceration in fiberglass then 6 months in barrel. No sulfur added.

This 100% Pineau d'Aunis from Nathalie Gaubicher is one of the most-loved wines at our shop. Lip-smacking blueberry, violets, white pepper, and a sublime mix of delicate fruit with earthy crunch. It's lightly fruited and nervy, but it has an underlying structure and texture that elevates it from something to chill and chug to something you can savor and contemplate. But don't hesitate to gulp it if you can't help yourself. [Jonathan Kemp August, 2020]
