Less than a half a mile down the road from Macari Vineyards, in the backyard of an Inn, grows Marquette, an inter-species hybrid (V. vinifera x V. riperia), grafted here a few years prior. These were the first grapes harvested, on exactly the 6th of September, only 8 days after the birth of Erik’s first child, a beautiful boy. This is a homage to him; it’s impossible to fathom how much he must have been on Erik’s mind as the harvest, always already a crazy time, began.
As mentioned, Marquette isn’t vinifera – and you can smell and taste this. It’s something unique, foreign – different – but very hard to articulate. The aromas are feral, dark plums, sweet-fruited yet also mature feeling, like the sweet aromas you get from older Barolos – sawdust, pheromones, cinnamon, cloves, who knows, just a wild melange of senses from the natural world. On the palate the wine is neither delicate nor heavy, mid-sized with a lazy swagger. The architecture feels different than a normal vinifera wine, maybe a bit softer, finer tannins. I’d personally chill the wine a bit; pair with something funky and essential. [Stephen Bitterolf]
