Christian takes a hands-off approach to winemaking, where the wines spend a great deal of time in barrels in contact with oxygen, some for as many as 5 years before bottling. After a hand harvest, the grapes are destemmed manually, and crushed by foot in large, closed top tanks that sit outside the winery in the shade. After crushing, the juice is moved to large barrels inside the winery, where fermentation begins naturally with indigenous yeast. After fermentation, the wine is transferred to additional barrels, where it spends 1 year aging in 500 to 1500-liter barrels. As of the 2015 vintage, all of Christian’s wines are made without any additions of sulfur. The wines are never racked (meaning they spend their entire aging process on the lees) and everything is bottled by hand to preserve the freshness of the wine and leave a little residual carbon dioxide to aid preservation. 

Himmel Auf Erden means “heaven on earth,” and indeed this wine  calls for lofty language — it's wild, savage, serene. On the nose, tight bunches of dried, medicinal herbs like sage, chamomile, and ginseng. Dark, fragrant flowers, sandle-wood, incense, petrichor, granite… it’s a mythological ambrosia straight out of Ovid's Metamorphosis. On the palate it’s all rich, beeswax, tonic lemonade, with incredible acidity. So much tension between the soapy floral elements (rose water, orange water) and a mineral sheen. Heaven indeed. Pickup Hours and Delivery Information

We are open 12pm-7pm, seven days a week. Orders placed online are ready to be picked up within the hour. 

Neighborhood delivery:

If you are requesting free local delivery, we are asking for a $75 minimum. Deliveries are made Monday - Saturday within our local neighborhood free of charge, defined by Eastern Parkway, Lafayette Ave, 5th Ave, and Franklin Ave. If you would like to tip our lovely delivery people, you can Venmo Vanderbilt-Wine-Merchants or add "Gratuity" to your cart. 

Please order by 3pm to guarantee same-day delivery. 

Greater Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan:

We make weekly hand deliveries outside of our neighborhood. These deliveries will incur a flat fee of $10. Once we receive your order we will reach out to coordinate the day and time. Orders are typically delivered within 1 week of purchase and usually sooner than that. If you need the wines earlier, or if you have any other special requests - please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’d love to help you with whatever your needs are, no matter how specialized or unique! Outside of NYC: 

For delivery outside of New York we ship via common carrier. We currently do not ship to the following states: AL, AR, CO, DE, GA, HI, IA, KS, KY, NC, MD, MS, MT, OK, PA, SD, UT, VT, WI. As statutory laws are constantly changing, please note that this list is updated frequently, and acceptance of an order does not guarantee that we will ultimately be able to ship wine to you. Unfortunately, we are not able to ship spirits anywhere outside of New York State.

All orders greater than $400 are entitled to complimentary NYC delivery or common carrier Ground Shipping. Just select the Concierge Shipping option at checkout.

Terms & Conditions

You must be 21 years or older to purchase and receive products from Vanderbilt Wine Merchants. If you request shipping you authorize Vanderbilt Wine Merchants to engage a common carrier to deliver your order. All shipments require an adult signature at the time of delivery. Therefore, either you or an authorized adult must be present at the time of delivery with proof of identification. 
If you wish to ship to a location outside of New York State, you assume all responsibility for shipment. We will notify you before processing your order if we are unable to ship wine to the state you request. For the protection of your wines, we will not ship during warmer months without your express request. All orders are packed immediately upon purchase but we may wait for optimal conditions to send. Since we cannot control the temperature of any common carrier, we do our best to send shipments out at the beginning of each week. We will always confirm any delays in shipment, and the choice is ultimately up to you.
Some of our wine is sold "Pre-Arrival." All "Pre-Arrival" items will be indicated as such on our website and include the estimated date of arrival. We will contact you once the wine has arrived and confirm any shipment or delivery requests prior to sending.
