Crocizia is Marco Rizzardi (with the tireless assistance from his colleague Serena). Their vines are located in the hills around the small town of Pastorello in Emilia-Romagna. Crocizia began from a small abandoned farm which Marco reinvigorated. Over the years he slowly expanded to around 5 hectare total, parcel after parcel acquired from neighbors. Those 5 hectare are non-contiguous, (divided between almost 40 separate parcels!) dotted throughout the Parma river valley. Many of the parcels Marco took on were abandoned family plots, intended to grow grapes for home consumption. So the parcels were very overgrown, but also untouched by industrial farming chemicals, which is a priority for Crocizia. They work only organically.
Marco and Serna pulled trees and stumps from between the rows, re-trained vines and rebuilt them, driving the windy roads from parcel to parcel. In the wines, their hard work pays off. They farm Malvasia di Candia, Sauvignon Blanc, Barbera, Croatina, Pinot Noir and Lambrusco Maestri. Nearly all of the wines they make are pet-nats.
