Alfredo Maestro Viña Almate 2018
Alfredo Maestro grew up among vines in Basque country, and when he moved to Ribera del Duero, he knew he was going to make wine. Farming came naturally to him, and from the get go, he was organic in the vineyard. But, because he didn’t have experience making wine, he copied recipes from a book, using the modern tools that his neighbors were using, namely yeasts, acids, enzymes and color-enhancers. He had a revelation in the early 2000s, and realized how strange it was to add chemicals to his juice after avoiding them on the vines. He’s been a card-carrying natural winemaker since.
Alfredo’s entry cuvee is made from fruit sourced from two organic plots of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), located at 1,000 and 700 meters above sea level, consisting of clay based soils. Majority whole cluster, the wine ferments steel vats, then ages for 4 months in neutral French oak. It’s unfined, unfiltered, and sees very low amounts of SO2. The result is a pure, full-bodied Duero wine with a clear red fruit character, which is given depth by aromas of baking spices and dark flowers. It’s a great wine to pair with grilled and roasted meats, or with a firm, aged cheese. Taste that clay terroir!
