This is a bizarro wine, and — yes — many of you will fall sideways for it; I do, that’s for sure. Gideon believes in releasing rose once it moves past a youthful, fruity stage, and if you like Lopez de Heredia rose (or whites) you will appreciate this one: at five years old, it’s an uber-complex, rustic umami bomb with structure and phantom-menace acidity. This is not a “pretty” rose; we’re way beyond charm, and the flavor landscape is unique. On the nose, it’s oxidative, with a waxy first impression. With air, memories of tropical fruits emerge in a haze of smoke: tangerines, passionfruit, papaya. I have a feeling many of you will appreciate the way this one pushes into truly psychedelic character after a few hours of air, gaining complexity along the way, and tasting best on day two.
Two years, ago I camped out in Gideon's Home vineyard and he invited me in for dinner. Before the meal started, his wife, Saron, sent Gideon back to the cellar for some wine, and he returned with two half bottles of Tickled Pink rosé, from 2009 and 2011. Tasting these wines at 10 years old was unforgettable and proof that these wines are meant to last for decades. 12%. 56 cases made.
