Costador "La Fassina" Trepat 2016
Costador is a project by Joan Franquet that focuses on native grapes from a single mountain in Catalonia, Spain. For the most part, the vineyards are ancient, ranging from 60-110 years old, and their elevation ranges drastically -- moving from 400 to 800 meters above sea level. The huge diurnal swings at these high elevations helps maintain freshness and acidity while allowing the grapes to slowly mature over an extended growing season. The winery has invested heavily in amphora and almost everything they release sees at least some time in clay (and some of them are sold in clay bottles).
These grapes come from vines that are over 100 years old, planted on stony clay soils. After a hand harvest, the clusters are partially de-stemmed then put into amphorae to ferment with native yeasts. After 14 months aging in amphorae, the wines are transferred into used, 228L French barrels where it ages for six months on the lees. The wine smells beautiful, surprisingly complex: there’s a red-fruited core lifted by delicate perfume, plus a nice woodsy earthiness from half a year in barrel. There’s that classic clay-soil richness on the back of the palate, and a real lift from the acidity that makes this a perfect wine for a feast.
